Do a library search to add resources to your reading list! When an item from our catalog has been added to your list via the Library Search feature, a URL link will be available for students to access the item in the database where it is stored. This is always preferable to uploading a PDF file of resources that the library subscribes to, because we are better able to track usage of library materials, while also avoiding any potential copyright issues.
1. Open your reading list and click the blue "Add Items" button:
2. This will open a sidebar to the right -- click on Library Search:
3. Enter the search terms you want in the 'Enter Search Criteria' field and press Enter (or click on the magnifying glass icon). Leganto will display a list of results based on your search from the Oxy Library catalog; if you see an item that you'd like to add to your list, click on the item's title and choose 'Add':
4. Your item is now added to your reading list (you may need to refresh the page to see it).
Note: If you add a physical book to your reading list, it will not say "complete" until it is reviewed by the library. We need to make sure that no one else has requested the book such as for course reserves.
You can upload your own content in PDF form to a reading list.
1. Open your reading list and click "Add Items":
2. A sidebar will open for different types of content. Click "Upload a file":
3. You will be prompted to either drag and drop or browse for your PDF file. Once uploaded, you'll be prompted to declare the article's copyright status.
By choosing "This file was authored by me" or "Fair use", the PDF file will automatically process and will be made available to your students immediately. A "no declaration" selection will require processing by Library staff and may delay your PDF file becoming available on your reading list. Most content is covered by Fair Use since you are using this for teaching. If you'd like more information about Fair Use, then review the US Code governing Fair Use or read the copyright and fair use at Occidental College document (found under course reserves).
4. If there is metadata attached to your PDF file, Leganto may be able to auto-fill the file's Title and Author information. If not, you can manually enter the information here:
5. Click "Add" or "Add & Close." Your PDF file is now added to your reading list and can be downloaded or read online. The "complete" tag in green means it's now accessible to students:
Resources can be added to your list manually.
1. Click on Add Items and view the menu on the far right of the page. Select Blank Form.
2. A window will popup prompting you to drag and drop or browse for the item you wish to add.
3. Once you add the item, Leganto may autofill the Title and Author. If not, you need to manually add them.
4. Next you need to select the "Type." Once you click on Type, the following menu will appear for you to choose the type of resource.
5. You will be prompted to either drag and drop or browse for your file. Once uploaded, you'll be prompted to declare the item's copyright status.

Cite It! is a browser bookmarklet that will pull resources from the web to add to your Reading List. Follow these steps to install it and use it.
1. Make sure that your Bookmarks Bar/Bookmarks Toolbar is set to display in your web browser.
2. Open the Reading List in your Canvas course. Click on your initials in the upper right-hand corner to open the user menu:
3. Click on Cite it! in the menu:
4. In the window that pops up, drag and drop the Cite It! icon into your Bookmars Bar.
5. Cite-It! is now installed and ready to use. Note: Cookie settings in your browser can interfere with Cite it! Troubleshooting tips
6. When you find a web resource that you want to add to your reading list (webpage, video, open educational book or chapter, etc), keep your browser open to the resource you'd like to add and then click the Cite it! button in your bookmarks toolbar.
7. A popup window will open prompting you to add the resource to your reading list. It will also display if the resource is covered by our library. This is important for resources that have a paywall. If it is covered by our library, then the students will have access to the full text. If you have multiple lists in Leganto, make sure that you select the correct one in the drop down menu at the bottom of the window. You can also edit metadata for this resource (such as the title, author, add a public note for your students to see as they browse your reading list, etc.). When you're ready click 'Add' or 'Add & Close.'
8. You'll see a message indicating that the resource was added to your reading list. You may need to refresh the page but once you do, you'll see that the resource has been added.
