Learning Outcomes

  • Distinguish and differentiate between primary and secondary sources.
  • Explore and analyze how combining primary and secondary sources can lead to the development of novel research questions.
  • Engage in scholarly dialogue by learning how to use of both primary and secondary sources can generate a conversation between themselves (as researchers) and published scholars.

This workshop will let you explore the art of letterpress in the Lowercase Studio.

  • Gain insight into "special collections," with a focus on Oxy’s unique materials, including rare books, artworks, and artifacts.

  • Effectively locate and access items within special collections using the catalog, Google, and librarian assistance.

  • Discover the importance of engaging with real objects as historical artifacts that offer unique stories beyond online images.

  • Explore creative ways to utilize special collections for exhibits and digital humanities projects.

  • Define and access the U.S.Census
  • Identify three main areas of data (ACS, Economic Census, Census of Governments)
  • Use Census Data Tools
  • Access Census Resources including infographics and visualizations
  • Identify Census products to use in upcoming courses/assignments
  • Learn different criteria for determining whether or not a source is “good”
  • Build a works cited page based on own criteria of what a “good” source is
  • Identify type of source by reading citation
  • Interact with different source types and consider how they interact with one another
  • Learn & participate in an active learning activity centered on source analysis
