Keenious

Find research resources using an academic research recommender tool

Searching

There are two ways to search using Keenious: Web based or within your Word or Google Doc.

Web based

1. Go to/log into Keenious and you'll see the following:

2. Copy and paste the text you want Keenious to review in the box provided or select PDF and upload a PDF. Then click enter or the search icon.  You'll see the following (this example uses copy/pasted text):

3.  Keenious has selected relevant research articles based on the text you gave it! Click on the article title to see the abstract and more information about the article including a list of similar articles.


Document based

1. After installing the Keenious plugin, open a Word or Google doc. Then click on the Keenious button in the Word ribbon

2. Now you should have something that looks like this (Word or Google):

3.  Enter some text in the document or highlight text in an already written document, and then click the 'Explore using Text' button to begin searching based on your writing.  If you click 'Explore using PDF', then you will be taken to Keenious website where you can search by uploading a PDF.  The following is what you'll see from 'Explore using Text' with your list of relevant articles on the right.

4. Click on the article title to see the abstract and more information about the article including a list of similar articles.

Refining Your Search

You can refine your search results directly in the search results sidebar

Refine results options

Search articles text box: type in keywords to refine the results list by your additional keywords.

Filters gives you the option to filter by:

  • Year Published
  • Citation Count
  • Open Access Only

Bookmarks allows you to:

  • Export the result page
  • Bookmark the result page

Topics organizes your article results by topics related to your document, which can be used to further explore relevant research

Group by topics

Cross Language:  Get results in English from non-English text input (leave Cross Language toggled on) OR get article results in the same non-English language of the text input (toggle Cross Language off).

Full Text Access

Once you've found an article you wish to view, the easiest way to access the full-text is by clicking on the 'Check Oxy Access' button. 

This will take you to the Oxy library site.  If we have access to full text, then you will see the 'available online' option.  If we don't, you can easily request it via interlibrary loan.

Additional Features in the Results List

You'll see three additional features in the articles in the results list (circled in red in the screenshot below).

  • Result Insights (bar graph symbol): Gives you the factors of why Keenious thought this article was relevant for you
  • Cite Publication (quotation marks): Allows you to create or export the citation for the article
  • Bookmark (star): Bookmarks the article for you so that you can find it again
