OneSearch: Step One For Library Research

How to effectively use the library's search tool, which covers many of our resources in a single search.

Interpreting Search Results

Your search results will show the following:

  • Items (articles, books, streaming media) that match your search terms
  • The number of search results retrieved
  • Filters to narrow or expand your search, on the lefthand side of the screen
  • Where you can find the materials (availability)
  • Each item record allows you to: read, cite, email, save, create a link, export to a citation management tool (e.g, Zotero), or print the item record

Refining Search Results

The sidebar on the left of your search results allows you to further refine your results by using filters. This is a great place to further narrow your search results to something more specific.

  • Sort by: relevance, date-newest, date-oldest, title, author
  • Availability: Options for open access, peer-reviewed, etc.
  • Resource Type: Magazine, book chapter, audio, video, etc.
  • Year Published: Refine results to include only a certain year or set of years (date range)
  • Subject: Narrow results to a more specific area of interest, based on your original search terms
  • Journal Title: Narrow results to a specific publication
  • Author/Creator: Narrow results to a specific person
  • Databases: Narrow result to a single database within Oxy's collection
  • Location: Use this filter for physical items
  • Language: Limit results to English or another specific language
  • Library: Describes where the material is located

Expanding Search Results

If you are searching for a specific item such as a book or article and the title does not show up in the search results, then click on the link at the top of the page called "expand your search."

This will launch the search into libraries around the world.  Then, using our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service, you will be able to request the item!  For more on ILL, review our ILL guide.
